Shire believes that it has a responsibility to society as well as to its shareholders. As the third largest pharmaceutical company in the UK, and one of the fastest growing in the world, it is fully aware that it must play its own part in ensuring the sustainability of the environment and that it should behave fairly, respecting the rights of individuals in the countries in which it operates. As a responsible corporate citizen, Shire is committed to supporting the continued growth and prosperity of the society within which it evolves. To that end, Shire and its employees devote considerable time, energy and financial resources to endeavours that contribute to the cultural and social enrichment of the communities in which we are present. Our approach to corporate social responsibility is intended to provide a framework for managing risk and maintaining the Company's position as a good corporate citizen, as well as creating a set of goals that will facilitate continuous improvement throughout the organisation. In our 2000 report we stated that we had developed our approach to environmental issues and planned to expand into other areas. During 2001 we developed our first corporate social responsibility policy. This not only covers environmental issues, but also ethical, human rights, health and safety, and employee issues, community relations and compliance. The policy will be communicated to all employees and published on our website. In parallel, we undertook a number of specific activities during the year.

1. Regulators should strengthen their efforts to ensure that advertising and promotion is in accordance with the approved product information and respective national regulations. To this end, regulators should collaborate closely with industry, publishers, the media and consumers. Such co-regulation of promotion must be underpinned by sound legislation and regulatory sanctions. Sanctions should be made public. 2. The global nature of the Internet is difficult to regulate. Regulators need to work together to control sources of Internet advertising. In addition, regulators should provide independent consumer and prescriber information on the Internet to support the quality use of medicines. This information should be easy to locate and be recognizable by prescribers and consumers. WHO is requested to continue to support countries in this regard. 3. WHO should increase its efforts to disseminate and promote the WHO Ethical Criteria for Medicinal Drug Promotion, in particular the provisions to ban direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription-only medicines and regulate and calan.

Total protein content mg ; and DNA content mg ; expressed in absolute amounts were decreased in the TPN piglets. Crypt depth m ; was similar in both treatment groups Tables 1 and 2 ; . Ileal measurements follow a similar trend. Wet weight, protein, and DNA contents were less in the TPN vs. ENT groups. Unlike the jejunum, no difference was noted with regards to villus height and area and crypt depth. Cell counts were corrected for villus size differences between treatment groups. IELs showed a marked reduction in number when the animals received TPN; however, there seemed to be no effect of enteral nutrition on the number of GCs per villus. Intestinal Permeability As a measure of paracellular permeability, we assessed pooled 24-h urinary recovery of markers expressed as a percentage of the dose recovered. Twentyfour-hour collections were used to obtain adequate marker recovery. We found 75 and 88% of the total recovered amount of mannitol within 12 h in the TPN and ENT groups, implying that collecting urine beyond 24 h would have resulted in insignificant changes to the data. Lactulose recovery was significantly greater at 2.931 0.67 vs. 0.179 0.11% between TPN and ENT groups, respectively. Similarly, PEG 4000 recovery was 12.78 4.11 vs. 0.96 0.24% between the same groups. To ensure that pre- and postintestinal factors did not affect recovery of the paracellular markers, we used mannitol absorbed via the transcellular route as a controlling factor, and recovery was notably reduced in the TPN group compared with the ENT group 52.99 3.86 vs. 68.35 3.94%, respectively; Fig. 2 ; . Mannitol is often used with lactulose to correct for the latter's recovery, because the two markers are not metabolized in the small bowel, empty similarly from the stomach, and are cleared in the same manner from the kidneys 5 ; . When lactulose mannitol ratios Table 2. Jejunal IEL and GC counts.

Success is no accident The European Agency for Safety and Health has launched a campaign named `Success is no accident' which will be the focus of a `European Week' in October. The campaign focuses on activities to reduce the number and severity of work related accidents and the importance of workplace safety and health in general. See the European Week website, : osha .int ew2001 Accident prevention in SMEs The cost of work related accidents is still a serious cause for concern to the European economy. About 4.8 million work related accidents resulting in more than three days absence from work and over 5, 500 fatal accidents were counted in the year 1996. In small firms, the rate of fatal accidents is around double that of larger companies. The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work provided EUR5m for an accident prevention scheme in small and medium sized enterprises SMEs ; . The Agency provides grants for projects that contribute to the reduction of accident risks in SMEs. Funding between EUR25, 000 and EUR200, 000 per project can either be submitted by SMEs themselves or be aimed at SMEs' specific needs. SMEs are defined as enterprises that have fewer than 250 workers, small firms fewer than 50, and micro firms fewer than 10. F. Dividends and Paying Agents N A G. Statement by Experts N A H. Documents on Display We are subject to the information requirements of the U.S. Securities Exchange Act of 1934, as amended, and, in accordance therewith, we are required to file reports, including annual reports on Form 20-F, and other information with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission by electronic means. Our public filings are available to the public over the Internet at the Commission's Website at : sec.gov. I. Subsidiary Information N A Item 11. Quantitative and Qualitative Disclosures about Market Risk As a result of our international operating and financing activities, we are subject to various market risks relating primarily to fluctuations in foreign currency exchange rates and interest rates. Accordingly, in order to reduce our exposure to these fluctuations and help guarantee operating margins resulting from its business, we apply a hedging policy based on the use of diversified, liquid financial instruments. We centralize all such transactions, except when, for legal or practical reasons, it is more convenient for affiliates to enter directly into these transactions. The tables below are based on certain assumptions and expectations that, by their nature, may prove to be different, particularly due to changes in foreign exchange rates and interest rates, and changes in our exposure to these risks. Foreign Currency Exchange Risk Because we sell our products in numerous countries, our results of operations and financial condition could be adversely affected by fluctuations in currency exchange rates. We are particularly sensitive to movements in exchange rates between the euro and the U.S. dollar, the British pound, the Japanese yen and to a lesser extent certain currencies in emerging countries. In 2004, 34.5% of our pro forma net sales were realized in the United States. While we incur expenses in those currencies, the impact of these expenses does not fully offset the impact of currency exchange rates on our revenues. As a result, currency exchange rate movements can have an impact on our earnings. When deemed appropriate, we enter into transactions to hedge our exposure to foreign exchange risks. This policy entails the periodic calculation of our global foreign currency exposure based on budgeted and forecasted operational transactions of both our parent company and of our affiliates that are denominated in foreign currencies. These transactions primarily concern purchases, sales, co-marketing and co-development expenses and royalties. In order to reduce our exposure to currency fluctuations impacting these transactions, we enter into transactions to hedge our exposure to foreign exchange risks, such as foreign exchange forwards, put and call options or combined optional derivatives such as collars. All such financial transactions are entered into with counterparts with a high credit rating and are centralized under a dedicated treasury team, except when, for legal or for regulatory reasons, it is more convenient for our affiliates to enter directly into these transactions. The hedging strategy is presented to and validated by our Audit Committee and a regular review of the level of our commitments related to these financial transactions is conducted by senior financial management. Nevertheless, these efforts, when undertaken, may fail to offset the effect of adverse currency exchange rate fluctuations on our results of operations. 147.
